CR-545 Inside Matte Urethane can be applied directly to properly prepared bare concrete. It can also be applied over Epoxy for a more durable topcoat.
Proper surface preparation is extremely important for good adhesion and long-lasting results.
For bare concrete:
- Clean the floor thoroughly. Remove all dirt, dust, oil, grease, wax, curing compounds, existing sealers, coatings, and other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.
- Mechanically prepare the concrete. The surface should be mechanically profiled to open the pores of the concrete and provide a suitable surface for the urethane to bond to. Diamond grinding is a great option for DIY and professional applications.
- Vacuum thoroughly. After grinding or profiling, remove all concrete dust and debris using a shop vacuum. Pay special attention to edges, corners, cracks, and control joints.
- Make sure the concrete is completely dry. Do not apply CR-545 over damp concrete or when moisture is present.
- Perform a small test area. Concrete varies greatly from floor to floor. A test area is always recommended to confirm adhesion, appearance, and absorption before coating the entire floor.
Previously Coated Concrete
CR-545 may also be applied over a compatible, properly bonded coating. Existing coatings should be thoroughly cleaned and mechanically abraded to remove the gloss and create a uniformly dull surface before applying CR-545.
Remove all sanding dust and make sure the surface is clean and dry before coating.
DIY Tip
After mechanically preparing bare concrete, the surface should feel clean and slightly textured rather than smooth or polished. If water beads heavily on the surface instead of absorbing into the concrete, additional preparation or removal of an existing contaminant or sealer may be necessary.
Good prep is the key to a good coating. CR-545 can go directly over bare concrete, but the concrete must be clean, dry, porous, and properly profiled for the urethane to bond successfully.
Mixing Instructions
CR-545 Matte Urethane is a 2 Part A to 1 Part B coating. For easiest and most accurate mixing, we recommend mixing a complete pre-packaged kit at one time.
- Pour Part B into Part A.
- Using a low-speed drill with a squirrel-cage or similar mixing attachment, mix thoroughly for 2 minutes.
- Keep the mixer at a slow speed to avoid whipping air or bubbles into the coating.
- While mixing, scrape the sides and bottom of the container to make sure both components are completely combined.
Important: Proper measuring and thorough mixing are essential. An incorrect mix ratio or material that has not been completely mixed may remain soft or fail to cure properly.
DIY Tip
Mix slowly and thoroughly. Faster mixing isn't better—it can introduce tiny air bubbles that may show up in your finished floor.
Application Instructions
CR-545 can be applied directly to properly prepared bare concrete or over a compatible, properly prepared existing coating.
1. Choose the Right Roller
Apply CR-545 with a quality shed-resistant roller cover. A 3/8" nap works well on smoother concrete, while a longer nap may be helpful on more textured surfaces.
A brush can be used for edges, corners, and other areas that are difficult to reach with a roller.
2. Work in Manageable Sections
Plan your application before you start. Natural stopping points such as control joints or saw-cut lines make great section dividers.
Once you begin a section, maintain a wet edge and continue working until you reach your stopping point. This will help minimize visible roller marks and overlap lines.
3. Apply a Thin, Even Coat
Roll CR-545 evenly across the floor at approximately 4–6 wet mils.
Avoid applying the coating too heavily.
Do not allow the urethane to puddle. Check control joints, low spots, textured areas, and impressions for excess material and roll or brush it out immediately.
Heavy or puddled areas may not cure properly and can develop blushing or a cloudy/white haze.
4. Watch for Bubbles
Concrete can sometimes release trapped air while a coating is being applied. This is called outgassing and may create small bubbles in the wet coating.
If you notice bubbles developing while the CR-545 is still workable, gently cross-roll the area in the opposite direction to help release them.
Do not continue repeatedly rolling the coating once it begins to set.
5. Know When to Stop
CR-545 has a limited working time after Parts A and B are mixed.
If the coating begins to thicken, become sticky, pull at the roller, or become difficult to spread, stop using it. The material has reached the end of its usable pot life.
Do not add water or solvent to try to extend the working time. Discard material that has begun to set and mix a fresh kit if additional material is needed.
Applying Another Coat
If an additional coat is applied outside the recommended recoat window—typically after approximately 24–36 hours depending on temperature—lightly sand the surface with a fine sanding screen.
Vacuum thoroughly to remove all sanding dust before applying the next coat.
For Best DIY Results
Mix slowly → Work in sections → Keep a wet edge → Apply a thin, even coat → Don't leave puddles → Don't overwork the coating.
Taking your time with preparation and having your tools and work area ready before mixing will make the application much easier.
